U.S. shares mixed at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial gains 0.09%
U.S. stocks were mixed at the close of trading on Monday as gains in the oil & gas, materials and consumer staples sectors boosted stocks, while falls in telecoms, technology and financials sent stocks lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.09%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.12%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.10%.
The biggest gainer in the Dow Jones Industrial Average session was The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which rose 2.33% or 2.48 points to trade at 109.11. The Dow (NYSE:DOW) was up 1.28% or 0.66 points to close at 52.15, while Walgreens Boot Alliance (NASDAQ: WBA) was up 1.26% or 0.49 points to close at 39.48.
Biggest losers included JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), which lost 1.22% or 1.41 points to trade at 114.35 in late trade. Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) declined 1.18% or 2.55 points to end at 213.32 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) shed 0.94% or 2.43 points to 256.80.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Penn National Gaming Inc (NASDAQ:PENN) which rose 5.56% to 36.05, Gap Inc (NYSE:GPS) which was up 5.44% to settle at 10.27 and General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) which gained 4.16% to close at 37.56.
The worst performers were Tyson Foods Inc (NYSE:TSN) which was down 8.40% to 80.10 in late trade, NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which lost 6.30% to settle at 177.93 and Enphase Energy Inc (NASDAQ:ENPH) which was down 4.38% to 287.74 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Helbiz Inc (NASDAQ:HLBZ) which rose 114.64% to 1.61, TOP Financial Group Ltd (NASDAQ:TOP) which was up 102.66% to settle at 20.57 and Karuna Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:KRTX) which gained 71.84% to close at 241.19.
The worst performer was Reata Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:RETA), which closed down 32.61% to 24.06. Uniqure NV (NASDAQ:QURE) fell 27.02% to 18.64. Nuzee Inc (NASDAQ:NUZE) fell 24.32% to close at 0.84.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2125 to 1021 and 141 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2399 rose and 1436 declined, while 229 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.66% to 21.29.
In commodity trading, December gold futures rose 0.79% or 14.15 to $1,805.35 per troy ounce. Meanwhile, crude for September delivery rose 1.51% (1.34) to $90.35 a barrel, while the October Brent crude contract rose 1.37% (1.30) to $96.22 a barrel.
EUR/USD remained flat 0.13% at 1.02 while USD/JPY rose 0.05% to 135.04.
Futures on the US Dollar Index fell 0.20% to 106.28.
